Local unemployment rate slightly higher in February

The unemployment rate in the area rose slightly last month to 4.6 per cent.

The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region shed 1,700 jobs with the loss of 2,100 full time jobs and 400 new part time jobs created.

The hardest hit sectors were manufacturing and construction.

Despite that the area still has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Ontario, “We continue to remain one of the lowest unemployment rates in Ontario; creating a very tight labour market for our economic region” says Dana Soucie, Executive Director for the Four County Labour Market Planning Board.

On Friday, Statistics Canada reported the national jobless rate was five per cent in February.
