Ontario police watchdog clears Listowel police officer

A Listowel police officer has been cleared in an investigation into a woman’s fall from a balcony.

Special Investigations Unit Director Joseph Martino says police were called to an apartment building on the evening of April 19th for a 40-year-old woman who was wanted for breaching the terms of her release by removing her monitoring device.

There was no answer after officers knocked on the door and when police entered the apartment she jumped from a balcony, suffering multiple fractures.

Martino ruled there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the woman’s fall.

The SIU is a civilian agency in Ontario responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that have resulted in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
