UPDATE: Stratford Beer Store fire deemed ‘suspicious’, police say

Stratford police and Stratford fire department have determined that a fire that started early Monday is suspicious in nature.

Firefighters responded to the fire at The Beer Store at 429 Huron Street in Stratford at 12:41 a.m.

Stratford Fire Chief Neil Anderson said there was “extensive” damage to the rear and roof of the building and damage to the storage and loading dock areas.

Damages are estimated at $1.5 million.

Sixteen firefighters were on the scene. There was smoke damage throughout the store.

An unsafe order has been issued by the City of Stratford building department and it is not known when the local beer store, one of two in the city, will re-open.

Cause of the fire is not yet known.

A joint investigation involving Stratford FD and Stratford Police continues.
