From humble roots, ‘Create a Smile’ has raised more than $300K

The numbers have been tallied and the 20th Annual Walkathon for the Create A Smile Foundation can be now be labelled another big success.

The event raised more than $33,000 for Community Living St. Marys and Area.

Over the years it has raised more than $310,000.

Community Living’s mission of improving lives of people with developmental disabilities is enhanced through the funding.

The inaugural walk started two decades ago when the Muir and Rossetti families were trying to raise money for a family member who needed to get some teeth pulled.

Government funding was not available.

So Create a Smile was born.

The family still helps out, said Jennifer Leslie, Executive Director, Community Living St. Marys and Area.

“They still are actively involved 20 years later in every walk. They raise a substantial amount. They help us organize, set-up, run the day, they are an amazing family.”

This year, funds will support security of home activities for increased participation in community events, and accessibility features in the community.

Community Living St. Marys also contributed financially to the new dock along the Thames River in St. Marys, which was recently unveiled.
