New LTC facility getting closer to reality in Stratford

A new long-term care facility in Stratford is getting closer to fruition.

At a special city council meeting Tuesday afternoon, council will address the sale of a vacant greenfield property on Vivian Line 37, in the north end.

A management report is asking council for authorization to sell the land.

In 2022, the province announced approval for a 160-bed long-term care facility in Stratford.

One hundred of those would be new beds, while the other 60 are replacing a former property on Mornington Street that closed several years ago after a flood.

A portion of land on the Grand Truck site in downtown Stratford was also considered for a period of time.

The 5.7-acre Vivian property was identified as the preferred choice for a variety of reasons, according to a management report, and it has been envisioned as a ‘campus of care’.

The developer is working on timelines with the Ministry of Long Term Care to get funding approval by November.

More than 44,000 people are waiting for admission to a long-term care home in Ontario, according to information provided to city council.

Tuesday’s special meeting of council is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. at council chambers at city hall.
