Conners in contention after first round at the Paris Olympics

Perth County’s Corey Conners is in the mix after his first round of golf at the Summer  Olympics.

The Listowel, Ont. native shot a 3-under 68 at Le Golf National in Paris.

Conners shot five birdies in the opening round to end up tied for 14th spot.

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan is the leader after shooting an 8-under-63, two shots clear of Xander Schauffele, the defending Olympic champion.

Conners and Nick Taylor are the two male golfers representing Canada. Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp are Canada’s representatives in the women’s field.

Women’s golf starts Aug. 8.
