Appreciating good music with like-minded community members is a great way to spend a Tuesday afternoon.
On Oct. 15, the Music and Opera Appreciation group in Stratford begins its 30th year with their fall series at the Stratford Country Club.
David DeVeau, board president, and Barbara Steed Young, artistic director, sat down with My Stratford Now to discuss the upcoming series titled Isolation.
Steed Young’s creative vision for the series came from a reflection of the past five years and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I think during the isolation period we really learned something about who is our community,” said Steed Young.
The Tuesday afternoon program sees a wide range of people come out, from long-time music lovers to newbies on the music scene. It’s a great opportunity to introduce people to the art form, expressed Steed Young.
“But opera is one of those things that are developed usually through a taste experience of listening to it over and over again” explained Steed Young.
The weekly event runs until Nov. 19 and is a social opportunity to meet local opera and music enthusiasts. They also offer an online program for those who wish to attend virtually.
The series runs from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is $10 per week or $60 for the series. Alternatively, you can attend online for $40.
The group will start on Oct. 15 with Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák. Next, they will look at Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. Live opera excerpts will be held on Nov. 12 by Kelly Walker and Friends, and the series finale will be Romeo and Juliette performed in ballet and opera excerpts, by Sergei Prokofiev and Charles Gounod on Nov. 19.
“Music and Opera is an opportunity for to get people out, get people out of their homes, get people together, because it’s healthy, it’s educational, and it’s pleasurable,” expressed DeVeau.
