Huge crowd for screening of ‘Derailed’ at LCFC

Passenger rail service remains a hot issue in the area.

Eighty people filled the Local Community Food Centre last night for a screening of the Canadian documentary ‘Derailed’.

The film discussed the past, present and future of our nation’s railway system.

It was followed by a lively panel discussion.

St Marys businessman and ‘Save VIA’ founder Chris West spoke about the need for a balanced transit strategy where railways and roads are funded equally.

His online petition to salvage passenger rail service sits at 3919 signatures today.

Sheila Clarke from the local branch of the Canadian Federation of University Women said the loss of the trains hurts the most vulnerable, is bad for the economy and she encouraged people to think beyond their own immediate situation to understand the need for trains.

Clarke also online the CFUW’s ‘Getting There’ campaign calling for a national transportation strategy.

Jassamine Tabibi is the Transportation Coordinator for the United Way Perth Huron.

She spoke about the United Way’s recent transportation survey and various initiatives they’re taking to better connect small and rural communities with the rest of the province.
