The public will get a chance to have their say on the future of the Discovery Centre building across from the Festival Theatre in Stratford.
The historic building in Queen’s Park at 270 Water St. has served different purposes over the years but it is mainly known as a former teachers college.
It was built between 1907 and 1908.
According to the Ontario Heritage Trust, the provincial government built four new Normal Schools to increase the supply of qualified teachers –Â in North Bay, Peterborough, Hamilton and Stratford.
The ‘Stratford Normal School’ attracted women and men from surrounding districts and educated them with an emphasis on conditions in the rural schools that employed most new teachers.
As many as 14,000 teachers were educated there before the teacher’s college closed in 1973.
The city took over ownership of the building from the province.
Stratford City Council will hold a special/public meeting at city hall on Thursday (Jan. 16) at 5:30 p.m., to “gather input and feedback from the community, which will help to inform the decision-making process.”
