Be wary of deceptive phone calls asking for personal information

Don’t trust caller ID, let unknown callers go to voicemail and don’t give out personal or financial information.

Those are just a few tips Ontario Provincial Police are reminding you of with residents across the province continuing to receive deceptive phone calls designed to mislead them into sharing personal information or making fraudulent payments.

Police say that many of these calls rely on Voice over Internet Protocol technology, which allows individuals to make calls over the Internet while disguising their real phone numbers as legitimate organizations or services.

You’re being advised to hang up and verify a number and if you’re not sure then contact  organization directly using a phone number from its official website.

You can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to report a suspected scam or do so online through their Fraud Reporting System.
