Mayor reassures residents hydrant flushing ‘doesn’t impact the quality of the water’

Stratford’s annual spring hydrant flushing is underway and the city has seen an increase in the number of calls, emails and social media messages about discoloured water.

Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma told MyStratfordNow it’s preventative maintenance.

“I just want to assure our residents that it doesn’t impact the quality of the water.”

Though it may temporarily discolour the city’s water, Ritsma said that the water in Stratford is safe and the division have recently received glowing reviews about quality standards.

Hydrant flushing twice per year cleans out iron deposits that can build up over time in the city’s watermains.

This routine maintenance ensures that the hydrants are functioning in case of an emergency.

Discoloured water will clear, but it is advised to wait until it runs clear before use or consumption.

You can clear the discoloured water by running cold water for 10 to 15 minutes.

If the water doesn’t clear after 15 minutes, turn off the water and wait 30 minutes, then repeat the process until the water clears.

The city’s hydrant flushing will last another five weeks.

For more information, visit the City of Stratford’s Discoloured Water webpage, or call its Water Division at 519-271-0250, ext. 5222 during business hours.
