Plant sale is a celebration of students environmental dedication

Eco-minded Stratford District Secondary School students are gearing up for a big event.

The 10th annual plant sale set for May 10 is organized by the green industries class.

Grade 10 student Ben Coulter expressed his love for the course.

“It’s a really awesome hands-on course, and it’s really interesting.”

Students say the plants move quickly and with everything affordably priced, a sell out is possible during the three-hour shopping window.

Last year $5,000 was raised. Funds support the program’s extracurriculars, such as attending eco conferences, visiting colleges to learn more about career options, and touring conservation areas.

Christine Ritsma teaches students about climate change, plant systems and soil science.

Ritsma said it’s important to fund the class, and activities for students.

“And all those kinds of programs are paid for just from the money that we get, so It all goes back into student learning.”

The plant sale takes place at the SDSS water tower parking lot from 9 a.m until noon.
