Lake Victoria water levels increasing following debris removal

While Lake Victoria’s water levels have gone up lately, more water is needed.

The City of Stratford posted an update Wednesday on the refilling the lake.

They say since debris was removed from the sluice gate at the RT Orr Dam last month, the lake’s water levels have been increasing.

“Yesterday’s storm and heavy rainfall provided a much needed boost in water levels, but the lake is still below summer operating levels,” said the city.

City staff continue to work with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, which maintains the dam, to manage the situation.”

The city adds its environmental services and public works teams are dealing with debris near storm outfalls, while parks staff are cleaning garbage and waste from the lake’s edge.

They say some pieces of trash like metal drums are still stranded in mud flats, and will be removed when safe to do so.

“Larger logs and branches within and around the lake provide habitat for fish and other aquatic life, so some will be left in place unless they pose a significant barrier,” said the city.

The city adds dredging or removing sediment is being planned for next year.
