MP puts little stock in electoral reform survey results

The results are in from an online survey on electoral reform in Canada and Perth-Wellington MP John Nater says he’s skeptical of them.

The federal Liberals launched the survey at MyDemocracy.ca as part of their campaign promise to do away with first-past-the-post elections.

70 per cent of respondents preferred a system in which several parties would have to agree on something before a decision is made, as opposed to one party having all the decision-making power.

Nater says the reason he’s not putting much stock into the results is because the survey was flawed:

He doesn’t believe a survey is the way to go about changing Canada’s electoral system:

Nater says the feedback he’s gotten from his constituents is that there are bigger issues, like the economy, to worry about.

He added that he’s not convinced that the time has come to scrap first-past-the-post, but that he would like to see changes made that give MPs more resources and power to help them better represent their ridings.
