United Church enters seed debate

Seeds are becoming a bigger and bigger issue.

Certain groups like the National Farmers Union say the ability for farmers to save, reuse, sell or exchange seeds is jeopardized by the Agricultural Growth Act.

They believe the proposed changes would empower multinational seed companies at the expense of local farmers.

Now, the United Church of Canada is also getting into the debate.

The Church says farmers buying and selling each other’s seeds is an ancient practice that must be preserved.

It says the changes currently being considered would threaten Canada’s food sovereignty.
