Police Warn be Weary of ‘Emergency Scam’

A Huron County couple is out $1,000 after falling for what police are calling the ‘Emergency Scam’.

The OPP says it involves someone usually impersonating a family member or friend, claiming they’re in an emergency and need cash to get themselves out of it.

In the most recent case, police say the scammer claimed they were in a car crash and arrested for impaired driving, requesting $2,500 to be released from jail.

The OPP warns the signs you might be a potential victim of the scam include urgency, fear, a request for money and especially secrecy.

If you have been a victim of this type of fraud police are asking you to report it immediately.
