Perth-Wellington MP critical of possible impact new Canada Food Guide could have on farming industry

The MP for Perth-Wellington says the new Canada Food Guide could hurt the local meat and dairy industry.

John Nater says he supports decisions that are made on factual, science-based research and to ignore the benefits that come from meat and dairy products is a disservice to Canadians and they could hurt local farmers, farm families, and agricultural businesses financially.

He says the new Canada Food Guide that came out on Tuesday eliminates the four food groups and downgrades the importance of the nutrition of meat and dairy products and, in turn, encourages Canadians to eat more plant-based proteins.

Nater says he has received feedback from the riding that the changes could end up hurting families that depend on farming for their livelihoods.

“That could have an impact on local farmers, our local farm families, I’ve talked to many farmers and many farm groups have expressed this concern and could see a drop in demand for these types of things.”

Animal-rights groups are expressing support for the new guide with its push toward more plant-based proteins over foods from fish and animals.
