Spring forward and change your batteries in your smoke and CO alarms

A sure sign of spring happens Sunday morning. That’s when we turn our clocks ahead one hour. Daylight time starts at 2:00 am on March 10th.  That means there is more daylight in the evening but the sun won’t rise until just before 7:45 am.

Roddy MacDonald, the Stratford Fire Department’s Fire Inspector, says this weekend is also a great time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms, “In order for your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to do their job they need to have working batteries. And once a year old batteries should be replaced, with new batteries. So when you change your clocks on March 10th we just want to make sure all the batteries are replaced and the alarms tested.”

MacDonald reminds residents who rent and tamper with your smoke detectors or CO alarms you could be fined up to $50,000.

When asked by MyStratfordNow.com whether the department still responds to calls where the alarms aren’t working he said they do, “There are still a lot of calls where people take the battery out, they forget to change them, the batteries are too old or the alarms are.  The educational component of it still needs to be hammered out every year, a couple of times a year.”

MacDonald says if you can’t change the batteries, call someone who can get up on a ladder for you.

If you have any questions you can call the Fire Department at 519-271-3212.
