Bat tests positive for rabies in Perth County

For the first time in seven years, a bat has tested positive for rabies in Perth County.

That’s according to the Perth District Health Unit who say the bat was captured in South Easthope on August 28th and it tested positive for the virus.

It’s the first animal this year in Perth County to test positive for Rabies and health officials saying that bats are very active this time of year as they prepare to hibernate.

Ten bats were submitted for rabies testing by the PDHU in August and people can become infected with the virus when they are bitten or scratched by a rabid bat and if left untreated, rabies is fatal in humans.
