City of Woodstock hit by apparent cyber attack

It appears that the City of Woodstock has been hit by a cyber attack.

The city announced Monday afternoon that they experienced a data breach early Saturday morning after a virus came into their system.

They say the virus is stopping the city from accessing its email and data network and Woodstock Police and the OPP’s Cyber Crimes Unit have been called in to investigate.

Woodstock’s Chief Administrative Officer David Creery says the incident looks like a ransomware attack but no formal demand for compensation has been made yet.

He says that experts examining the attack don’t believe any personal or financial information has been comprised and they are hoping to begin recovering systems Tuesday afternoon.

In a cyber attack in April, the City of Stratford paid just over $75-thousand in Bitcoin to have its systems restored.
