West Nile Virus surveillance begins in Huron Perth

Huron Perth Public Health has begun West Nile Virus surveillance with the warmer weather here.

They are reminding you to protect yourself against the virus which is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Evidence shows that many people infected with WNV will have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all but people with weaker immune systems and those with chronic diseases are at greater risk for serious health effects.

HPPH says over the last several years, mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in Huron and Perth counties.

In the last five years, there have been fewer than five cases of human infection reported.
