A residential development could be about to move forward in Stratford despite many residents speaking out against it.
The proposal, by developer Chancery Developments, would see two 3.5 storey stacked townhouse buildings built on Ontario Street close to downtown and at the site of the former Golden Bamboo restaurant.
The plans had originally called for a four-storey multi-unit residential development but were revised after discussions with the city and feedback from residents with the two buildings would now be made up of a total of thirty units.
Over a dozen residents spoke out against the proposed changes at the City of Stratford’s Planning and Heritage Committee meeting on Monday afternoon pointing to concerns including the development being too big for where it will be located, and environmental, noise, and pollution.
However, Councilor Danielle Ingram supported the request saying that young people need the ability to enter the housing market and that the city needs to make sure that we aren’t stuck in time.
She introduced a motion, that was passed in a 7-4 recorded vote, approving the zoning change with the project’s total height set at 14.5 metres and 91 units per hectare.
The proposal will come back at a regular council meeting in two weeks with a bylaw still needing to be passed.
