Stratford area MPP says changes to eye care coverage made using best clinical advice

There are some changes to keep an eye on under a new agreement between the province and the Ontario Association of Optometrists.

People 65 and older will be covered for one eye exam every 18 months, as of September 1st, down from the one a year in the past.

The change doesn’t apply to seniors with conditions affecting their eyes such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetes.

Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae says the agreement was made using the best clinical evidence available and adds it helps improve access to care for those with chronic eye diseases.

The move was criticized by some including NDP Leader Marit Stiles who says “seniors are having a hard enough time right now without having to go longer between eye exams, which are critical to seniors’ health.”
