Nearly 250 impaired charges laid so far locally in Festive RIDE Campaign

West Region Ontario Provincial Police have laid nearly 250 impaired driving charges so far during their Festive RIDE Campaign.

It began last month with police also handing out 43 warn-range suspensions to drivers who failed a sobriety test.

Last year, 210 impaired charges and 29 warn-range suspensions were given out after the first 33 days of the campaign.

OPP West Region Media Relations Coordinator Derek Rogers says impaired driving is easily preventable.

“It is a function of somebody making bad choices, so we want people to make the right choice and that is if you’re going to have a few drinks or if you’re going to take drugs then make alternate plans to get home that don’t include getting behind the wheel.”

Police have held 1,673 RIDE check events so far this year compared to 1,458 during the same period in 2022.

The campaign runs until January 1st.
