Community leaders recognized through business excellence awards

There was an enigmatic speech from a business leader, heartfelt dedications to family and colleagues and a moment to pause, slow down and take a breath.

It was a full house at the Arden Park Hotel for the Stratford and District Chamber of Commerce’s Business Excellence Awards on Thursday night.

The annual event announces winners in various categories from a list of nominees, while celebrating commitment to community.

Breen Bentley, owner of Bentley’s Bar Inn, reminisced about the challenges of running a local downtown business for 40 years. Bentley – his children beside him on stage – offered enlightening insight into his career, with some colourful memories to share – all the while praising his family for their help and community for its support.

Some winners praised their family members, past and present, who forged the way to the stage and, ultimately, the business excellence award, through selfless contributions.

D&S Downham Equipment picked up the Business of the Year award after winning the Skilled Trades award. Mark Downham told guests his grandfather started the business and his father continued that before him.

Marc Johnstone thanked his wife, Kristene Steed, for their partnership in a heartfelt message. The owners of Rheo Thompson Candies thanked their staff for their hard work over the years after accepting the Retail Award.

Christa Mabee, owner of Modo Yoga, accepted the Service Award on behalf of her fellow Yogis, members, mentors and supports in the community, particularly through some difficult times.

“They supported me with so much compassion and grace and understanding, generosity and love,” she said.

Mabee led guests through a short breathing exercise while on stage.

The business owner said her practice is as important as ever.

“I am representing everyone who is responsible for allowing us to continue to do this work that is not only increasingly needed during these challenging times, but I feel so honoured to be a part of it, to spend my life, most days, moving and breathing and creating understanding and compassion and peace, with truly incredible people who are open and aware.”

Mabee said she has learned the power of community through having a business in Stratford.

“I am just so grateful.”
