Stratford Blue plaque tribute to Charley Lightfoot

A black pioneer hockey player was recognized Wednesday with a special honour.

A Heritage Stratford Blue Plaque ceremony took place at 94 Coubourg Street, where Charley Lightfoot lived after moving to Stratford in 1888.

Lightfoot played integrated hockey in 1906. He played in the Manitoba Professional Hockey League with the Portage la Prairie Cities and, after playing on the East Coast and in Ontario, returned to Stratford.

He worked at the former GTR shops and coached a hockey team. The Stratford Perth Museum donated one of his hockey sticks to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Heritage Stratford’s Blue Plaque Program celebrates the connection between notable historical figures and the buildings where they lived or worked.
