A former Executive Director of the Foundation for Education Perth Huron is facing criminal charges.
Laura Pethick faces charges that include fraud over $5,000, mischief to data and utter forged document.
Charges are mostly related to fraudulent purchases of gift cards and forging signatures, according to Stratford police.
A complaint originated from the organization’s board of directors and Pethick was charged by police in May.
According to its website, the foundation is a charitable organization, supporting education in excess of the levels prescribed by the Ministry of Education.
It raises and receives funds, and enhances the learning experience of students through a wide variety of activities in the arts, life skills and diversity.
It builds partnerships between business, community agencies and education through projects and produces events that enhance student life and allow them to reach their full potential, according to its website.
A major partner is the Avon Maitland District School Board.
Colleen Schenk, Chair of the Foundation for Education, told MyStratfordNow that the Foundation For Education has provided excellent programming to students across Huron and Perth counties for over 30 years, including curriculum enhancements, support for students in need, provision of charitable receipts and assistance with school fundraising efforts.
“Although our Executive Director was dismissed without cause in early March, irregularities were later discovered leading to an investigation and the subsequent charges. The situation is very disappointing but the foundation board is focused on moving forward, and ensuring that this does not occur in the future.”
“We appreciate the understanding of our supporters as we navigate this issue and look to the future with optimism and positivity. Our programming is continuing, and we are accepting donations as usual. We are carrying on the good work of the Foundation and wish to assure our supporters that this valuable support will continue.”
Reached by MyStratfordNow via email, Andrew Porter, legal counsel for Pethick, provided a statement on behalf of his client.
“Laura Pethick has faithfully worked with the Stratford community to help those in need for 17 years. She categorically denies these allegations of impropriety and looks forward to the opportunity to respond to these charges in full.”
Pethick’s matter was addressed in court on Monday and adjourned until Sept. 9.
