OPP, AMDSB team up to educate about human trafficking

It’s a difficult but important community issue.

Human trafficking is the topic of a free event hosted by Perth OPP and the Avon Maitland District School Board.

It will be held Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Mitchell District High School.

Guest speakers include Melanie Knight, Executive Director of Bridging Gaps Anti-Human Trafficking.

Knight has experience being trafficked.

Det. Sgt. Ashley Horton, with the OPP Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, will speak from a policing perspective, including warning signs, risk factors, local trends, and investigations.

A Q&A will follow.

Victim Services Huron Perth, Perth Mobile Crisis Response Team, Optimism Place, Stop Violence Against Women, and the Huron Perth Centre are also attending.

Police say across Ontario, an increasing number of victims are being recruited for the purposes of sexual and labour exploitation and what was once seen as a “big city problem” is now common across the province.

Local youth are involved and are also being targeted.

You can register on Eventbrite.
