Male in custody, woman recovering in hospital, after intimate partner violence

A 51-year-old male Stratford resident is in police custody following an intimate partner violence (IPV) incident in the north end of Stratford today.

On Thursday (Dec. 5), shortly before 5:30 a.m., a female victim had been located walking along Mornington Street by a witness who contacted police. The woman was then transported to the hospital. The female remains in the hospital and is receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.

The accused male was located at a residence on Mornington Street, where he had barricaded himself inside the home.

Police closed off areas of Mornington Street, Quinlan Road and Graff Avenue for the investigation due to a public safety concern, as a firearm was reported to be used during the violent offence.

Police negotiated a peaceful resolution with the male, who was arrested shortly before 11 a.m. after he exited the residence, following the stand-off with police.

A replica firearm was also seized at the time of arrest.

The man was transported to Stratford Police Headquarters where he was charged with serious criminal offences. He will be held in custody to attend a bail hearing.

The incident of intimate partner violence comes the day before The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, held annually on Dec. 6.

It also comes less than two months after Kassidy Ballantyne-Holmes died at Stratford General Hospital after suffering a gunshot wound at an Ontario Street residence on the morning of Oct. 15. Ballantyne-Holmes was 35-years-old.

A 41-year-old male is charged with second degree murder in that incident.

Stratford Police also noted an expression of thanks to the witness who stopped to provide assistance to the female victim on Thursday morning.
