January is Alzheimer Awareness Month and the Alzheimer Society Huron Perth is gearing up for educational events.
The Memory and Aging program is a four-week education program for anyone over the age of 55.
It discusses normal memory loss due to aging and when to be concerned.
Christy Bannerman, Public Education Coordinator from Alzheimer Society Huron Perth, explains the program’s basis.
“It’s really answering the question, what are normal changes to my memory as we age?”
It will be offered over Zoom for January and February.
Morning sessions start Jan. 23, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
This “healthy brain workshop” helps participants learn memory strategies and provides information on memory changes and aging.
“We’re getting more and more requests from people who want to know what they can do to optimize their brain function and that’s what this course will cover,” said Bannerman.
Another upcoming online event is Jan. 22 called, Planning Ahead for Medical Decision.
Local geriatrician Dr. Alexandrea Peel will speak to the topic.
On Jan. 29, there is the Stratford Safety Sessions at the Burnside Agriplex to teach seniors about the latest on driving and aging, fire and home safety, frauds and scams.
Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and it runs until 1 p.m.
“We love January awareness month, because we’re out in the community trying to get word out, get to know people, and bring information and awareness,” said Bannerman.
