North Perth Mayor Todd Kasenberg broached the topic of council composition and proportional representation at Thursday’s Perth County Council meeting.
Kasenberg’s wants staff to evaluate composition and ensure appropriate and up-to-date representation from the lower tiers.
He says proportionality of council composition has not been evaluated since around 1998.
North Perth, and the county itself, have grown substantially.
Kasenberg explained the disproportion between the fastest growing municipality compared to the other lower-tiers, who are not experiencing growth at the same rate.
Kasenberg suggested a review be completed and adjustments be made now that “North Perth is substantially larger than its peers.”
However, other county councillors disagreed with this motion, citing that staff already have an abundance of work keeping them occupied.
Deputy Warden Dean Trentowsky was concerned that it could cause disparity with other lower-tier members.
The motion was ultimately defeated after a vote from county councillors, with only Kasenberg in favour of the motion.
