United Way partners with The Local to host election education series

United Way Perth-Huron and The Local Community Food Centre are hosting a candidates’ forum and educational series titled Community Connections – Election Edition.

It is a non-partisan, educational series engaging residents during the election.

The series will explain the provincial election process, introduce guests to local candidates, and help them make an informed voting decision.

Julie Docker Johnson, community connector at The Local, told MyStratfordNow they have held similar events in past years, including all-candidates meetings and election education presentations.

Next Tuesday (Feb. 4), participants will learn about the role of the provincial government and identify issues important to them.

The following Tuesday (Feb. 11), there will be all-candidates meeting where voters can break into small groups with the candidates to discuss important topics.

“It’s not going to be the candidate standing at the front of the room telling all about themselves. They are literally going to sit at a table with community members and talk about what is important to them.”

On Feb. 18, participants will learn how to follow-up with candidates and get ready to vote.

Docker Johnson just confirmed that an official from Elections Ontario is able to attend all sessions to help out with any election-related questions.

Docker Johnson said there is plenty of room and they hope to get about 80 people out.

All dates run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m at the Local.

Register by contacting Julie Docker-Johnson at the Local at connector@thelocalcfc.org or by calling 519-508-3663 ext. 1005.
