Another reminder to stay safe on the water from OPP

Numerous marine incidents over the weekend have led to the Ontario Provincial Police  again reminding residents to emphasize safety on the water.

OPP report various detachments were called to multiple incidents on OPP-patrolled waterways and they are asking the public to take measures to avoid tragedy.

They remind boaters and paddlers that alcohol and/or drug impairment, operator inexperience and failing to wear a lifejacket contribute to accidents and deaths.

Capsized vessels and falling overboard remain the leading cause of death in OPP-investigated incidents.

Everyone in a boat should be wearing a lifejacket.

Police advise checking the weather and ensuring your vessel is functioning and equipped.

Swimmers should never go into the water alone, children should be supervised closely, and swimmers should know their limits and obey posted signs and warnings.

Vessel owners/operators should also familiarize themselves with the Safe Boating Guide.
