Ransacking Troy a ‘bold reimagining of Homer’s epic poems’

The story of a Trojan prince abducting a Greek queen and the 10-year war that follows is being reimagined on the Stratford Festival stage.

Ransacking Troy has started previews at Tom Patterson Theatre, with opening night scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21.

Directed by Jackie Maxwell, the festival describes the production as ‘a powerful and provocative new work’ by playwright Erin Shields, based on Homer’s poems The Illiad and The Odyssey.

Shields, the festival said, ‘flips the lens on the Trojan War, offering an alternate ending told not through the eyes of warriors but through the voices of the women at its heart’.

It explores themes of war, power and resilience and stars Maev Beaty as Penelope/Odysseus and Irene Poole as Clytemnestra/Agamemnon/Iphigenia.

Ransacking Troy runs until Sept. 28.
