Healthcare workers to protest in Stratford

Healthcare workers will rally outside of Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae’s Lorne Avenue constituency office on Thursday.

Michael Hurley, president of CUPE’s Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, said in a media release that emergency department wait times in the province have increased significantly.

Health care workers will protest what CUPE describes as the provincial government’s failure to address the hospital funding crisis.

Hurley said patients pay a heavy price of emergency department backlogs, as overcrowding leads to increased risks of oversights and medical errors, worsening symptoms and lower quality of care, and higher death rates.

Hurley adds that the Ford government has shown a stubborn insistence on austerity for hospitals.

OCHU-CUPE represents 46,000 health care staff including workers in the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance.

The rally starts at 10 a.m. at 55 Lorne Ave. East.
