Firefighters, police respond to fire inside shopping cart

No one was injured on Thursday when police and firefighters responded to a fire inside a shopping cart.

In an interview with MyStratfordNow, Fire Chief Neil Anderson said they responded to an area at 125 Erie Street, near the Bunker Performance Lounge around noon.

“We had no idea what was in there, so we sent our typical response of two vehicles. A city employee met us at the location, and there was a small, metal bucket inside the cart that had smoldering materials inside, we put it out with a portable water extinguisher.”

He said the damage was kept to the bucket, which was removed and disposed of at the city landfill.

The fire chief said they believe the bucket was lit up by the cart owner, who was carrying a lighter.
