Huron Perth Public Health warns of multi-day heat event

Hot and humid weather is expected in the region and it will stick around until at least Wednesday.

Huron Perth Public Health said a multi-day heat event starts today (July 13), with temperatures over the next four days ranging from 30 to 37 degrees Celsius, with humidex values into the mid to high 40s.

The temperature is expected to top out on Tuesday at 37 degrees Celsius.

It won’t get much cooler overnight, with temperatures between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius.

Huron Perth Public Health adds that hot humid air can deteriorate air quality.

Heat warnings are issued when high temperature or humid conditions reach criteria established by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and are will elevate the risk of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Public health said risks are greatest for older adults; infants and young children; people with chronic illnesses, such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions, or psychiatric illnesses; people who work in the heat; people who exercise in the heat; people experiencing homelessness and people with low income (who may not have access to cooler air).

They advise taking measures to protect yourself including drinking cool liquids; reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day; wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric; spending a few hours in a cool place, such as a tree-shaded area or air-conditioned space; taking cool showers or baths; preparing meals that don’t need to be cooked in the oven; blocking sun out by closing curtains or blinds during the day; avoid sun exposure and shade yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or using an umbrella.

Public health also advises never leaving people or pets inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.
