Progress is being made ahead of a 40 km/h speed limit pilot project in northwest Stratford.
On Monday night, city council voted unanimously to amend a bylaw, allowing for the speed on multiple streets in the area to change to 40 km/h.
That includes more than 23 kilometres of local streets and nearly six kilometres of collector streets, encompassing the city’s two high schools, four primary schools, and a daycare centre.
The changes are part of a pilot speed limit project scheduled to begin in late-August and run until fall 2027.
Mayor Martin Ritsma said this amendment is the continuation of a study on the project that was approved by council earlier this year.
He told MyStratfordNow that it ensures the changes brought forward by the project are reflected in their bylaws.
Once the initiative starts, city staff will collect speed data on those streets to compare the average speed people are going on before and after putting on the 40 km limit.
Surveys and polls will be conducted to get feedback from the community.
Results will be brought back to council as well as recommendations on whether to continue, modify, or expand the project.
