GOHL: Couple of road losses on opening weekend for Stratford Warriors

Stratford Warriors are still looking for their first win after the opening weekend of the Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League season.

The Warriors dropped two games by 5-3 margins, on Saturday in Woodstock and in St. Marys on Friday for their season opener.

Colin Slattery’s third period power play marker made it 4-3 against the Navy Vets yesterday, but an empty netter from Colby Branton with 59 seconds left sealed the deal for the league’s new entry.

Cole Shoup, Keaton Ferras, Joshua Jodoin and Kyle Arthur also scored for the Navy Vets (2-0).

Chase Martin and Ethan Bridges added goals for the Warriors.

It was a similar script Friday night against the Lincolns.

Grady Murphy’s goal got the Warriors back to 4-3 in the third period, however, Owen Bruining’s second goal of the game with 74 seconds remaining added an insurance marker for the hosts.

Blake Elzinga added two goals for the Lincolns (1-0) and Ryan Hodkinson also scored.

Slattery opened the scoring in the first period and Drew Hodge, with the man advantage, also scored for the Warriors (0-2).

Elsewhere in the GOHL over the weekend, Listowel Cyclones picked up two points via two overtime losses.

On Sunday, the host Cyclones came back from 3-0 down only to lose 4-3 in the extra frame to St. Thomas Stars (2-0).

Tyran Lawson scored the game winner.

Khade Metatawabin scored twice for the Stars. Jimmy Sutherland added a single.

Heath Bradley, Shayne Keefe and Dax Vader scored for the Cyclones.

On Friday, the Cyclones let a 5-3 lead at home slip away in a 6-5 loss to the Navy Vets.

Jaxon Bagshaw completed the hat trick with the overtime winner.

Jaxon Boone, Evan Giannone and Ferras also scored for the Navy Vets.

Thomas Paleczny, Taynton Berfelz, Koby Gravelle, Clark deBoer and Keefe scored for the Cyclones (0-2).
