100th anniversary celebration weekend for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 Stratford

A big celebration is in the works for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 Stratford.

The branch is celebrating its 100th anniversary and festivities are planned for the weekend of Oct. 16-18.

Branch president Frank Mathieson said it’s been a complete community effort getting prepared for the occasion.

“The planning for our 100th has been in the works now roughly for a year and 15 dedicated members of the Legion have put this all together for the community and members to take part and enjoy.”

Mathieson says the tombolla, or casino night, was the biggest money maker for the Legion in years past, and while they don’t have any cars to raffle off anymore, there is a big screen tv, wine and a year’s worth of bread.

The casino is scheduled for the 16th. A laying of the wreath will take place at 9:30 a.m. on the 17th at the cenotaph, followed by the dedication of the centennial bench.

Also that Saturday is an open house from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m., featuring a free BBQ, cake cutting, a meat draw and dancing along to local entertainers, Strings ‘N Taps.

Festivities continues on the 18th with an open house from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. A sold out roast beef dinner concludes the evening.
