New laws give ATVs more on-road access, increase safety requirements

There’s good news for off-roaders in Perth County.  The Ontario government has passed new laws making on-road access easier.

Starting on July 1st more types of ORVs and ATVs will be allowed to use the shoulder of public roads.  That includes two-up ATVs, side-by-side ATVs and utility-terrain vehicles.

New safety measures are coming in as well.  All riders — including drivers and passengers of all ages — will have to wear a helmet and use a seatbelt or foot rests, where applicable.

An education period will take place until September 1st before tickets start getting handed out.
