Walter Douglas, age 92 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at St Marys Memorial Hospital, St Marys ON. He was born March 10, 1923, son of George and Hannah (Little) Douglas. He followed his brothers Eric and Elmer to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces, joining the Essex Scottish Regiment in 1942. On returning to Canada from Europe, he married Marjorie Hymers (April 1946) who predeceased him in 1981. He started his working career young on the family farm and then went on to a sales career – first with Powell’s Grocery in Stratford, then the Coleman Meat Packing Co. and retired from Schneiders Meat Packing in 1986. He is survived by his wife of 32 years Laura (Earl) Douglas, his sons Larry (Dawn) and Alan (Colleen) and his daughter Karen Douglas (Peter Hryniuk), sister Dorothy Pinkerton, grandchildren Robert and Stephen Douglas, Alexa (David McNally) and Douglas Hryniuk, step-grandchildren Cheryl and Josh, and great-grandson Cole McNally, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Marjorie, his parents George and Hannah Douglas, his brothers and sisters-in-law Ralph (Mildred), Eric (Dorian), Elmer (during WW 2) and Lyle (Mary) and his brother-in-law Jim Pinkerton. Family and friends are invited to a visitation to celebrate his life on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the W.G. Young Funeral Home (Reception Center) 430 Huron Street, Stratford from 2-4 p.m. Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at a later date in Donegal Cemetery.
