Major changes are on the way for one of Stratford’s high schools.
A press conference was held Monday afternoon in the front of Stratford Central Secondary School where members of the Avon Maitland District School Board announced they are receiving $5.1 million dollars in funding from the Ministry of Education.
Board Chair Randy Wagler says the funding will be augmented with money from the boards reserves to enhance accessibility and renovations in Stratford Central which includes replacing one of its wings, the renovations are anticipated to start in the summer of 2019 and because of how extensive the work is Stratford Secondary wont be able to be used during the 2019-2020 school year and students will be relocated to Stratford Northwestern and possibly other schools.
Wagler says once completed the rejuvenated buildings will provide programming benefits to students from both Stratford Secondary and Stratford Northwestern through integrated programming.
“We don’t want to have any barriers for anyone, whatever it might be, so by adding an elevator and by bringing the level of the new wing to the same level of the rest of the school we’ll just remove those barriers and just make it a more welcoming place for our students and their families.”
The funding will also be used for ongoing improvements at Stratford Northwestern and Wagler says the board will be consulting with all of those who will be impacted by the renovations in the near future.
