More bats in the air as they prepare for hibernation

If you notice more bats around, or even in your home, you’re not alone.

This is a busy time of the year for the animals with the warm weather bringing more out and causing them to become a problem if you have to get one out of your house.

If you have them in your home, experts say you should call professionals to come build them out which can mean installing one-way doors which can be tricky because bats can squeeze themselves through small openings and they usually come back to where they roost.

Perth District Health Unit Senior Inspector Dale Little says there are lots of reasons for why we see more bats in the summer.

“It’s due to the fact that I think a lot of the young, juvenile, bats are starting to learn how to fly and they’re getting ready for hibernation by searching out food so I think that people come into more contact with them.”

If you come into contact with a bat, Little says you should contact the health unit right away to see if you may require the rabies vaccine.
