OPP targeting distracted driving over the Labour Day long weekend

Have fun this Labour Day long weekend, but pay attention while driving on roads and highways.

That message from the Ontario Provincial Police who announced Thursday that they will be conducting a weekend blitz on distracted driving.

OPP officers have investigated a total of 5, 619 collisions so far this year that involved distracted drivers with 1,051 of those involving injuries.

They are reminding drivers that even holding a cell phone or other electronic device while driving is against the law with the penalty for distracted driving a $490 ticket and the loss of four demerit points.

The blitz comes on the heels of a deadly two-vehicle collision outside Stratford on Tuesday that resulted in the deaths of a ten-year-old boy and a two-year-old boy.

What caused that collision is under investigation.
