Support offered to farmers impacted by toxic plant disease

The Perth-Wellington MPP says the Conservative government is “committed to supporting our farmers and agriculture communities.”

Randy Pettapiece made the comment after it was announced that the provincial and federal governments are teaming up to help corn growers in Ontario whose crops were affected by a toxic plant disease.

The two governments will provide assistance to farmers who experienced high levels of DON, which was brought on by wet weather this year.

The province says the disease is “caused by a fungus that lowers the market value of affected corn, and can render it unmarketable at high levels.”

The Ministry of Agriculture says it will also work with farmers to find new ways to reduce the disease’s impact.
