Alfred William (Bill) Ashton

Bill Ashton, a resident at Spruce Lodge, passed away in his 95th year on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Stratford General Hospital.  He died peacefully with his three daughters at his bedside.

He was born in Windsor, Ontario on May 14, 1925 son of the late Alfred Henry Ashton and Annie Martha (Jacobs) Ashton.

Surviving are his three daughters:  Pamela Ayres (Douglas), of Stratford; Christine Andrews (David) of Chatham, Ontario and Denise Skowby (George) of Stratford;  grandchildren: Sean Ayres (Terry), Melissa Ayres (Casey), Devin Andrews (Jennifer), Ryan Andrews (Margaret), Samantha Tynkkynen (Erik), Simon Skowby (Shelby) and Alison Michel (Shawn); great-grandchildren: Sophia, Miranda, Rowan, James, Thurston, Clara and Finley.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Eileen (Bailey) in May, 1995, a grandson Jason Andrews (1974) and his sister Margaret (Peggy) Ashton (2018).

In 1933 Bill’s family moved back to London, England.  Towards the end of World War II he volunteered for service in the Royal Air Force.  He attained the rank of Sergeant and saw service as a crew member flying in Lancaster bombers.  Following the war he trained as an electrical engineer and worked for the British government.  In 1966 he returned to Canada with his family and settled in Stratford.  He worked for Muirhead Instruments/Novatronics as a research and development engineer.

Friends will be received at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St. Stratford on Monday, January 27, 2020 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.  The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 12:00 noon.  Rev. Dr. Lorne Mitchell will officiate.  Burial will be in Avondale Cemetery.
