Nethercott, Gordon

The Nethercott and McLean Families celebrate the life of their beloved Gordon, who died in the loving arms of his family Tuesday, July 22, 2014 – with a beautiful blue sky on the horizon. Gordon was born and raised in Blanshard Township and moved to Northern Ontario as a young man, making Thunder Bay and Barnum Lake home for forty years before returning to the St. Marys area where he married Helen in 1985.  He died in Blanshard Township after a very brief illness.  He was 91 years old. Gordon attended Radio College in Toronto in 1944, landing his first job with Lands and Forests, flying with bush pilots to repair radios in remote locations of Northern Ontario.  He spent 10 years in Sioux Lookout, establishing his own business, Northern Electronics, then moved to Thunder Bay, where he worked for Sears Canada until his ‘first’ retirement.  He spent the next 29 years enjoying his ‘retirement’ working daily at the Queens’ Inn at Stratford, where he was “Grandpa” to the many family members and staff who have been a part of the family business through the years.  Beloved husband to Helen. Loving father and step-father to Joanne McFarlane, Allen & Cindy Nethercott, Larry & Brigitte McLean, late Al McLean, Gord & Nikki McLean, Barb & Larry Ford, Betty Finnie, and Marg McLean. Grandfather to 28 wonderful and devoted grandchildren and their partners. Great grandpa to 32 grandchildren, all of who know him and love him. Great-great grandfather to 5. Special father-in-law to Michael McFarlane. A loved and celebrated friend of Fraser & Trudy Crinklaw. Gordon is also survived by two sisters, Helen Nethercott and Lois Taylor and two sisters-in-law Joyce Nethercott and Eileen Nethercott. He was predeceased by his parents Roy and Alberta (Bellamy), two brothers Lloyd and Bill, one sister Ethel and her husband Don Johnston. Gordon has been a welcome and much loved member of the McLean and Thompson families for 29 years and will be missed by Vernon & Bessie Thompson, Anna & Bill Stephens, Erma (late Bruce) McLean, John & Marlene McLean, Jean & Earl Foster, Len & Marg Boreham, Murray & Linda McLean, Doris Forman and Ray Rafman. Gordon was a much loved uncle to his many nieces and nephews.  A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held this Friday, July 25th at 2:00 pm at the Motherwell-Avonbank Presbyterian Church, Road 163 (the Mitchell Road) at Line 16.  A private burial will follow.
