Investigators confirm at least two tornadoes swept through southwestern Ontario

Investigators have now confirmed that at least two tornadoes swept through southwestern Ontario.

The Northern Tornadoes Project out of Western University in London has confirmed that an EF0 tornado was seen near Belmont on Sunday while an EF1 tornado was confirmed near Lucan.

It’s the second tornado confirmed near Belmont in a short amount of time with the first confirmed on June 10th.

Dave Sills is the Executive Director of the Northern Tornadoes Project and he says the hot weather we saw on the weekend played a role in the tornadoes developing.

“When you get that heat and the moisture you end up with lots of instability and this area of thunderstorms was ahead of a cold front that was coming through.”

Damage investigations are continuing Tuesday in the Exeter to Tavistock area and the Woodstock to Beachville area.
