The MP for Perth-Wellington says federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s resignation was almost an inevitability.
John Nater says there had clearly “been a falling out” between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Morneau on “any number of issues” including the WE Charity scandal that saw Morneau having to repay $41,366 in travel expenses covered for him by the charity.
Morneau announced his plans to resign on Monday night, saying that he made the decision because he had no plans to run for office again and he thought it was important Trudeau have a finance minister with a “longer term vision.”
Nater says people in his riding are tired of political scandals, especially during a pandemic.
“While they should be focusing on the needs of Canadians, on the challenges they’re facing, of small business owners, of employees, of people without employment right now, instead we see the government having to respond to scandal after scandal.”
Nater says proroguing parliament until the fall during a pandemic is challenging as legislation is sometimes needed “at the drop of a hat” to deal with the ever changing situation.
